Famous Musicians I’ve Met

This came up a while back in a Reddit thread. It was fun to think through people I’ve met so I thought I’d share it here.

Eamon McLoughlin (fiddle player for The Greencards): I met him at a party. He had just moved to Austin to start something here. We talked for about 20 minutes, he was friendly & interesting. I approached him after a show about 5 years later, of course he didn’t remember me but he was still nice.

Sufjan Stevens: One year a friend of a friend called and asked if a songwriter could stay at our place during SXSW. We said sure. He was awesome. We chatted over coffee one morning, really nice guy. 2 years later I realized that I love his music. Sigh…

Shawn Colvin: I got to go to a private concert. Apart from her performance she was pretty quiet, but she struck me as genuine.

Southern Culture on the Skids (all of them). I approached them after a show. They were amazing. Super fun.

Johnny Goudie: I sat next to him in a coffee shop late one night. We talked for maybe an hour. He encouraged me to quit my job and become a professional musician.

Alex Griffin (bassist for Ned’s Atomic Dustbin): Approached him after a show. We talked about basses & touring. He was awesome.

Emilio Navaira: A long time ago I worked at the Majestic Theater in San Antonio. I worked back stage during the tejano music awards. He & I didn’t really hit it off.

These are all fun memories.

My Bracket

Okay, it took me some surfing to figure it out, but I finally found a bracket that I could configure on the web and save as a .pdf file. So, here’s my bracket.

Lenwood’s 2006 Bracket

I know what you’re thinking. Duke will fall to Texas? Yeah, well, its MY bracket, and I can’t hope for my team to fall to anyone. Plus, I believe we have the talent and the motivation. Though, I do have to say, I could be pretty happy watching Duke fall to UNC. In fact, I think as long as Duke falls, I’m good. I mean, Coach K has a career in advertising, what does he need basketball for?

Listening to… Um, I’m going to have to find a new thing to do here. I listen to music all day every day now, so what I’m listening to changes a couple of times an hour. I haven’t found a solution to this question yet, so I’ll just post the full albums that I listened to today.

  • Medeski, Martin & Wood – Uninvisible
  • Audioslave – Audioslave
  • Radiohead – OK Computer
  • Sufjan Stephens – Seven Swans

There was some other random stuff, too, but that’s the majority.

Hook’em Horns!

Bear Fan, for a day

Last night was all about sports for me. I went to a buddy’s house for small group, and we ended up watching Baylor v Tulane in the college world series. I was, of course, pulling for Baylor because they’re in my conference (Big 12), and I have several friends that are alumns. Man did they make a great showing! They were down 7-0 in the 7th inning, and they stunned Tulane by pulling out a 7-8 victory!

But that was yesterday. My allegiance to Baylor is now officially over. Now they face my team. Hook ’em!

After that I switched over to game 6 of the NBA finals. My Spurs just didn’t have the starch last night. I was really hoping that Hamilton would sit down when his mask broke, no such luck. The Pistons are such a physical team! If I hadn’t grown up in San Antonio, I might like them. We’re really going to have our hands full against them on Thursday. They’re the defending champs, they’re fired up, and when they’re fired up they are even more physical. But, they’re on our turf. Go Spurs Go!

Listening to Sufjan Stephens. Last night I was talking about his music with a buddy and he said, “if the bible were set to music, it would be Sufjan’s”. I agree.

Spring Is Here

Howdy all, the last month has been good. I’ve had some time to chill out lately, which has been so good.

I’m loving our spring weather. The bluebonnets are out, and every day is gorgeous. I’m dying to do some camping, even if its only for one night. I can feel a trip to Big Bend coming, though I haven’t made plans for it yet.

Over spring break Daniel Smith of Danielson and Sufjan (pronounced soof-yahn) were in town for SXSW, and they spent a couple of nights with us. I visited with both of them, but had a particularly good visit with Daniel. I’m always encouraged in my pursuit of music when I visit with people that are out there doing it. Previously I had been thinking that its time to retire all of my instruments, but I now realize that thats a bad choice. So, I pulled out my gear and plugged in. I’m not giving up on music! I need to be in a band again. I need that venue for expression.

In my last post, I expressed frustration over not being able to get a USB memory key to work with my system. So I went to the capmus computer store to see what Win XP would cost, expecting to have to save for it. It was so affordable that I bought both it and Office XP on the spot. It took about another week to complete the O/S swap, but now everything works perfectly. I -gasp- like Win XP! Please don’t tell anyone that I said that.

School continues to be challenging. Working at the beginning of the semester set me back in my schoolwork, and I’ve been digging myself out since. But, God is soveriegn, and he’s answered some big prayer requests lately. I like what i’m learning, and I’m super excited about the direction that I’m headed in.

I’ve been looking at cars lately. My truck will need some work soon, and I’m in the process of deciding whether I want to do the work, or get something else. I know for sure that my next vehicle will not have an automatic transmission. I’m particularly attracted to 4Runners. I think if I found one thats 5 or 6 years old that’d be a good fit. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make that financial jump yet, but I’m hoping that my stocks make a huge rally, and fast!

I’m not really doing any reading for fun right now. All of my reading has been devoted to calculus, physics and statics. Though I’d like to read Hannity’s Deliver Us from Evil at some point. I have been playing a bit of Halo. And this month marks the 10th year since Kurt’s passing, so I’ve pulled out all of my Nirvana cd’s.
