Disposable Car

I’ve been driving an F-150 for the past 11 years. The same one, in fact. I love trucks, and old trucks are even better than new trucks. I like them so much that for 8 years I had not one but two old Fords. So, to say that I love my truck is an understatement.

I blogged earlier this summer about high gas prices. With a 5.0 liter V8 and a 34 gallon gas tank, the high gas prices that I’m in favor of are killing me. A trip to the gas station usually costs me $70-$90, and I have to make that trip at least once a week. I’m a student on a budget, so this isn’t really working out for me very well.

I’ve been saving for a new car for the past couple of months. I can’t bring myself to take on debt, so I have to pay cash. I’ve been looking at cars in the $10k range, thinking that I’d be ready to buy later this year or early next.

Sunday my plan changed. I thought to myself “why not get the cheapest beater that I can.” I checked the paper and Craigslist, and found several candidates. After a couple of phone calls, I went for a test drive. Tuesday morning I picked up my car.

I bought a 1991 Honda Civic Si Hatchback. Tiny car, tiny engine. The best part is that it has a sunroof. The previous owner rebuilt the engine in July. The interior is in great shape. Its a 5-speed. And it quite literally cost me almost nothing. If the engine blew up tomorrow, I’d sell it for a little bit less than I paid for it. And it even has a sunroof.

So far I’ve really enjoyed it. It feels weird to be so low to the ground, but its pretty fun to take turns quickly. Its oldness means that there are some unpleasant sounds, but who cares. For what I’m saving in gas prices, this car will pay for itself in a few months.

As soon as I calculate the gas mileage of this little baby, I’ll post it. And if you see me driving around with the sunroof closed, ask me to open it. That thing should ALWAYS be open.

  1. Yo Chance, sorry we missed each other at ACL Fest. Yeah, I’m within a couple of days of calculating the mileage of this little thing, so I’ll be sure and post some pics when I divulge my rockin MPG.
