Oh, and I don’t think I’ve mentioned that I’ve signed up for my first triathlon. I’ve entered Tri the Rock, which is in Rockwall (TX) in the last weekend of August. And, my buddy BK is going to train & complete the tri with me.

So, between now and August BK & I will be training for a 300 yard swim, 14 mile bike and 2.9 mile run. I think that makes this a dash class triathlon, but I may be mixing up terms. Either way, that swim sounds intimidating to me.

  • Cycling: I’m ready. I love being on my bike. Bring it on.
  • Running: Blech. I don’t like running. But, I’ve run enough that I know this won’t be a problem.
  • Swimming: Gulp (no pun intended). I’m scared. I know how to swim, but it would be a vast overstatement to say that I’m a swimmer.

Still, taking in the whole of it, I’m looking forward to the event, and getting in shape will be a nice side benefit.

Here’s an interesting side note, every time I type the word triathlon I add an extra letter and enter “triathlong” then have to backspace. Could that be a Freudian slip?

  1. You’ve got lots of time to get yourself acclimated to the water from now until August so I’m sure it will be cake for you. I know you’ve got a girlfriend who can give you lots of tips but I would encourage you to start practicing a breathing rhythm early. I know that sounds weird, but if you can develop a breathing rhythm that is comfortable for you it will be a habit and something you don’t have to think about during the race.

Breathing, see, that’s the kind of stuff that I don’t know. But, you’re right, I have plenty of time to prepare. Plus, in the midst of my intimidation, I’m excited. I’m hoping this will be a lot of fun.

Ooooh, now THAT’s a Freudian slip!
