This weekend I’m headed to Big Bend with some friends. I can’t wait to get out there. We leave early on Friday, and return sometime Sunday afternoon. The entire trip, apart from the drive, will be spent hiking in the Chisos mountains.
I’ve been to Big Bend a couple of times before, and the most striking thing that I can recall is the night sky. There aren’t any cities or towns for literally a hundred miles, so there isn’t any light pollution. I can remember the Milky Way being a white stripe across the sky, you couldn’t miss it.
And the solitude. I’m looking forward to that, too. I’ll be with friends, but that’s it. The park is huge, and this is off season, so we shouldn’t see many other people. Especially on the trail. Cell phones don’t work. There is no wifi. No radio stations. Just you and the wilderness. I’m even trying to pack sparsely. I want to leave as much of civilization behind as possible.
I am taking a camera, I’ll try to remember to take some pictures for you.
